The Company
The Angels of Light was an avant garde gorilla theater group that emerged on the San Francisco scene in the early '70s.

The Performance

The Approach
I worked closely with the then creative director Rodney price to develop the scenes. As with all of their other performances, keeping costs down was a major factor. Working with the generous donations from their benefactors, much of the scenery and props were to be constructed entirely from fireproofed cardboard. After several trips to Cliff's hardware and we had constructed a complete stage at Theater Artaud, complete with a fly gallery.5

Three major scene changes, one building off the next
Actor initiated scene modifications to create intimate spaces
Small Footprint, allowing for for the large cast

Using the concept of an illustrated manuscript inspired several mideaval text, the action would flow from scene to scene like the pages of a book, using in some places a more current metiphor of a pop-up book, with set pieces unfolding and changing allowing all of the pieces to function as double duty.

Transitions
The action throughout the performance was continual with each scene flowing into the next. By utilizing a universal scrim as an act curtain, the action could flow downstage, and cross fading through the scrim to projected scenery to allow for a quick scene change behind the scrim.
