Act
1, Elevation
Mikado,
The San Francisco Lamplighters
Winner
of the Dean Goodman Award, for Best Sets in a Musical
The
Company
The Lamplighters is San Francisco's only year-round musical theatre
company. They specialize in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan and also
regularly present comic operas and musicals from European and American
repertoires as well as our own original Gala , written and produced
by the company every year. Our General Director is Barbara Heroux, and
our Artistic Director is Baker Peeples.
 The
Performance
Gilbert & Sullivan’s greatest hit was prominently featured in last
year’s Oscar-winning film Topsy-Turvy. "Topsy-Turvy" is a
good phrase to describe the world of The Mikado -- a universe in which
"the punishment fits the crime," but somehow an offense as
innocent as flirting can get you executed! Join Nanki-Poo, a prince
traveling incognito; Ko-Ko, a tailor unexpectedly catapulted to the
rank of Lord High Executioner; and Pooh-Bah, the Lord High Everything
Else as they come face to face with The Mikado himself!
The
Approach
I
was contacted by John Allecca, of the Lamplighters to design a unit
set that could be:
Free standing, to be independent of a particular house.
Transportable to multiple venues
Small Footprint, allowing for for the large cast.
Working together we came up with the concept of a Japanese
magic box, evolving throughout the performance. The set continually
moves out unfolding changing shape throughout both acts.
Transitions
The floating appearance of the set,
which is loaded from upstage center, allows for multiple levels and
entrances, allowing for a full procession which proceeds from the central
pavilion. In act 2 the set is reconfigured, appearing identical to the
act one set which evolves in a completely different fashion.
